Kääntöpoiju - Art by Reijo Raekallio
Art from the North. Finnish Craftsmanship. The Work of Two Masters
*When the rugged beauty of Lapland meets the craftsmanship of Lappeenranta, something extraordinary is born. Something made to be admired, used and cherished for years to come.*
Good things don't always happen in a hurry. Sometimes an idea needs time, the right people and a little courage before it can become reality.
The idea of bringing the artwork of Lapland artist Reijo Raekallio into everyday objects first emerged during his lifetime. But bringing that idea to life had to wait.
After Reijo's passing, his widow Maria Grandell and Leena Erkko, founder of Galleria Kääntöpoiju, found common ground. Mutual friends and a shared love of art and Finnish nature brought the two women together.
One was entrusted with preserving a remarkable artistic legacy. The other brought decades of experience working with fabrics, materials and traditional craftsmanship.
Their collaboration was born from a simple idea: not to turn art into something it isn't, but to give it a new place to live.
## Reijo Raekallio – Art Shaped by Life in the North
Lapland is more than beautiful landscapes and mountain silhouettes. It is freezing temperatures, vast distances, resilience, silence and sometimes a rather rough way of life. But it is also humour, warmth and the ability to see what truly matters.
Reijo Raekallio knew this world.
In his art, the North is not a polished tourist postcard. It is full of life, character and stubborn individuality. People and animals, sensitivity and strength. Sometimes a twinkle in the eye, sometimes something that makes you stop and look a little longer.
Reijo had his own way of seeing the world and a remarkable ability to turn what he saw into unmistakably his own art.
A creative signature like that does not disappear when the artist is gone.
## Leena Erkko – A Woman Who Knows Her Fabrics and Her Craft
Within the historic Lappeenranta Fortress, in the charming surroundings of Majurska House, Finnish craftsmanship has had a home for decades.
Leena Erkko, founder of Galleria Kääntöpoiju, has worked with textiles for more than 40 years. That kind of experience teaches you which materials last, which ones truly work and which ones merely look good.
Linen holds a special place in Leena's heart. Not because it is always an easy material to work with, but because it is genuine.
Linen is allowed to show the marks of life. It softens with use, stands the test of time and gradually becomes something familiar and personal.
Leena's expertise combines traditional craftsmanship, extensive knowledge of the textile and clothing industries, and years of experience in design and teaching.
She doesn't create products simply to be admired. They must also be practical, durable and made to be used.
When Reijo's artwork became part of Leena's design process, a new way of combining powerful artistic expression with functional craftsmanship began to take shape.
## Two Masters Who Never Met
Reijo and Leena never knew each other.
They never sat around the same table designing a collection or choosing fabrics together.
And yet, their creative work now meets.
Reijo's art brings the soul of the North to these products: the world of Lapland, its stories and its unmistakable character.
Leena gives that art a material, a shape and a purpose.
Together, their work becomes cushion covers, pot holders, trivets, coasters, scarves and ponchos.
Objects that are not meant to sit untouched on a shelf, but to become part of everyday life.
Art can live on the corner of a sofa, on a dining table or around your shoulders on a freezing winter day.
And that doesn't make it any less valuable.
Quite the opposite.
## Maria Grandell – Guardian of an Artistic Legacy
Reijo's widow, Maria Grandell, plays an essential role in bringing this story to life.
Maria has given Leena permission to creatively incorporate Reijo's artwork into products designed and made in Finland.
But this collaboration is about much more than printing images onto fabric.
It is about allowing an artist's life's work to continue its journey.
About giving his art the opportunity to reach new audiences and become part of people's homes and everyday lives, far beyond the walls of a gallery.
Maria safeguards Reijo's artistic legacy. Leena brings her own professional expertise, creativity and craftsmanship to the collaboration.
In this way, the original artwork retains its value and identity while finding new forms of expression.
## From Lapland to Lappeenranta – and Out into the World
These products have their roots in two very different Finnish landscapes.
In Lapland, where nature asks no permission and the seasons set the pace.
And in Lappeenranta, on the shores of Lake Saimaa, where traditional craftsmanship and skilled hands continue their work within the historic walls of the old Fortress.
The products are designed and made in Finland.
Materials are carefully selected, and the quality of the workmanship reflects the skill and experience behind every piece.
The aim is not to create beauty that lasts for just a moment.
It is to make things that stand up to everyday use, travel through life with you and become more meaningful over the years.
Things you won't feel the need to replace when the next trend comes along.
## More Than an Object
When you hold a Galleria Kääntöpoiju product featuring the artwork of Reijo Raekallio, you are holding more than an object.
You are holding a meeting of stories.
There is the artist who saw the North through his own eyes.
There is the craftswoman who understands her materials and knows how to turn them into something beautiful and lasting.
And there is the person who carries the artist's legacy forward, making it possible for his life's work to find new forms and new places in the world.
Every product carries a piece of this story.
Not polished to perfection. Not made to be disposable.
But genuine Finnish art and craftsmanship.
**Rooted in the North. Crafted by hand. Made for life.**
